Meet the Farmers

The Foothill Produce and Flower Farm is owned and operated by Harry and Susan Carey.
Our vision of running a small farming operation usuing sustainable and organic farming practices has evolved over several years.

The seeds of our vision were planted early on when visiting Susan's parents who operated a vegetable stand from their property in Loomis, CA for over 25 years. Rather than retire and fade into the sunset we decided to follow their example in staying active and launch our new farming career.

We purchased our 10 acre property sight unseen while living and working in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our family back home gave the property a thumbs up. We jumped in.

Instead of building a new house like most folks would, we opted to move into the existing modest home on the property and invested in an irrigation system, farm equipment, built a barn and then the greenhouse.

The learning curve has been steep and many days frustrating, but always rewarding. What a better way of living the second half of your life!

Our daughters are all grown up so . . . we adopted 'the boys,' our surrogate sons, for $50.00 each. The purchase price was cheap, but the vet bills and all the property damage incurred throughout their puppyhood really ratcheted up the expense.

They have chewed through miles of irrigation tubing and broke off water lines while doggie jousting with each other. One morning Harry was out in the field on the tractor and spied a 30 plus foot tall geyser originating from the broken water main to the house. Thankfully, we all survived their puppy stage and things are a bit less exciting, unless of course they see a gopher, rabbit, cat . . .
